The developer has not uploaded a game yet...

Somehow, both our WebGL build and the Windows build have disappeared. But you can still play our project here: https://tranquilmage.itch.io/cursed-chess-2

Use the unique moveset of each colored chess piece to recreate the color pattern on the top of your screen. Over the course of the game, curses will be applied to your board which alter the moveset and behavior of certain pieces!

All the possible curses

Dance of the Castle
After each turn which uses a Bishop or Rook, the moved piece turns into the respective other.

Dizzy Pawns
After each turn which uses a Pawn, the pawns switch their movement direction from vertical to horizontal (or the other way around).

Quantum King
The King can teleport to any tile on the board, with the exception of his adjecent tiles.

Shade Shifter
The Queen can only end her move on tiles of the opposite color of the one she started on (black or white).

Knight's Fright Removed due to last-minute bugs! :(
Knights can no longer be placed on tiles adjecent to other pieces.

Concept drawing

This game was made in 48 hours as a part of the Game Maker’s Toolkit Game Jam 2023. All the art (except music) as well as all the code was made and implemented during the Jam by two people. At the end, time got a bit short, but we hope you'll still have fun! Please leave your feedback in the comments!

Roles Reversed

While brainstorming ideas for this years jam, we struggled a bit to find a dynamic that was not simply revering the roles in a power hierarchy but was actually fun to play around with. In the end, settled on reversing the objective as well as the movesets that the player is used to when playing with pieces of chess. The game is controlled with chess pieces, yet the games objective and nature has been reversed to be non-competitive, meditative, single player and sandbox-like.

About Us

As we are siblings, we have closely worked together on this project.

Hi! I’m Maria, I’m a 23-year-old full-time game developer working at an Indie Studio in Berlin. I have worked with Unity for about five years now and am happy to show what I have learned in this Game Jam. I wrote the game’s code, implemented everything and made the VFX/Shaders/Materials for the game. Everything I did in the project was created during the jam.

Hello, Daniel here. I am 21 years old and currently working as a web developer. My job was to create the art for the game - this includes the initial concepts, 3D models, UI, artworks as well as the online presentation. This year I also did the level design.

Thank you for playing and commenting!
