You are a talented real estate agent who has decided to buy many plots of land in the desolate town of Bebenbaden. Too bad you haven’t practiced your German in a while, otherwise the name might have implied that in fact, this town is facing earthquakes on a daily basis. How the houses have survived this long is a mystery. But you’ve got to make the best of it: Try to save your plots of land from nature’s wrath by clicking on houses and quickly catapulting them out of them way when you feel an earthquake approach. You goal: keep all houses intact for as long as possible. Once you are down to five houses, the game is lost.

This game was made in 48 hours as a part of the Game Maker’s Toolkit Game Jam 2020. All the art as well as all the code was made and implemented during the Jam by two people.

Out of control

After hearing this year’s theme, we started by discussing different ideas that came into our minds. We thought about a game where you cannot control at what times you die, as well as a race car game where you cannot control the speed at which you move. But we stuck with another idea: Try to build and maintain a town, while nature’s forces are running wild around you. This concept evolved from building and repairing the town to moving around the buildings in an attempt to protect them from numerous natural disasters. While we initially planned to have around three different possible disasters, when we got around to implement the earthquakes, we decided against any other occurrences like fires or tornados. We believe that this idea has much potential if we had worked on this for longer, we could imagine more features like randomly generated towns and more natural disasters.

We stuck with the idea of shooting around the houses because this way, the player is not able to have precise control over where the houses exactly go. The pacing of the game is quite fast, you need to react quickly, before the houses have already been turned into flying debris by the unpredictable quaking grounds.

About Us

As a pair of siblings, we have closely worked together on this project.

Hi! I’m Maria, I’m a 20-year-old Game Design student from Germany. I have worked with Unity for about a year now and am happy to show what I have learned in this Game Jam. I wrote the game’s code, did a lot of implementing and made the VFX for the game. I also worked on Post-Processing, put the scene together in Unity and made a Shader for the game. Everything I did in the project was created during the jam.

Hello, Daniel here. I am 18 years old and just graduated from High-School. This is the first game project I have ever worked on. My job was to create the art for the game. This includes the initial concepts, color palettes, 3D models, textures, sound effects as well as music. On the last day of the jam, I also focused on the presentation of the game online. The game assets were created in blender. While the music was created by hand, I have used royalty free sound libraries online to select the sound effects for the game, which we have credited in the game.

Thank you for checking out our game!
